Kaili’ohe Kame’ekua

Kaili’ohe Kame’ekua lived in Kamalo, Moloka’i from 1816 – 1931. She was Ruling Elder of the Paia-Kapela-Willia ‘Ohana, and the teller of the stories in Tales from the Night Rainbow – Mo’olelo o na Po Makole, The Story of a Woman, a People, and an Island, Copyright 1984, 1987, 1988.

Tales from the Night Rainbow is an oral history s told by Kaili’ohe Kame’ekua, recorded by Pali Jae Lee and Koko Willis.

Says Kaili’ohe Kame’ekua: “Most Hawaiian history has been written from the pathways taken by foreigners who wrote Hawaiian history as they saw and believed things to be. It was not a Hawaiian view, or from a Hawaiian pathway.
